“In this last fortnight, I felt like I could detach and sort of hide in a way. I needed that.” - Rory on his post-Masters malaise... or me dreaming about what a vacation must feel like as I leaned like the Tower of Pisa in the Portland airport last week Sherpa-ing two gate checked car seats, a gate checked stroller and a backpack filled with new toys, books and a tablet.

Also lol at someone seriously using fortnight in a sentence.

Taco Bell x Bad Birdie Invitational Week

GOLF MÁS

Dare I say that the Taco Bell x Bad Birdie Invitational this week was as much of a smash success as the launch of the Doritos Locos Taco? I dare.

A field of the most promising junior golfers battled it out in Southern California to earn an exemption to compete in the PGA Puerto Rico Open and LPGA Tour Ford Championship. The vibes were at an all-time high and I can only imagine the amount of Crunchwraps consumed.

The big winners were Kihei Akina and Asterisk Talley. Kihei is a top 100 AJGA ranked player who committed to attend BYU and Asterisk is... oh... the #1 ranked female junior golfer in the country.

And for those who followed along on social, you got the full view of the new capsule collection we designed in collaboration with Taco Bell as well—and might I say it's worth a visit before they're cleared out. A Swing Taco tee is most definitely on its way to my house as we speak.

P.S. I know I may be a little more than biased here, but the tagline Golf Más is gold, Jerry, gold!

(A Seinfeld reference for those of a certain age. And as I type this, I wonder that despite Seinfeld being an all-time comedy, the level of dated this must feel as a now 35? year old show would be the equivalent of someone hitting me with a Three's Company joke when I was in high school. Yikes.)

We all have to start somewhere

THE MOST RELATABLE LEBRON'S EVER BEEN

Circling golf social this week was footage from Lebron on his IG where he claims to be on day two of his golfing journey. I say "claims" because there is no way this is only the second day he's swung a club... perhaps second time he's played on a course? And if this is the swing he has on day two of ever trying golf then just strike me down and erase the headline because the swing ain't bad.

What caught my attention the most, however, was the banter in the background of the clips. It's perfect, "new to golf but still supporting your boy" one liners that I've encountered word-for-word in my own early days of golf.

Video 1 - Lebron post-swing with a cigar hanging out of this mouth; "Where'd that go? Oh, alright!" The dumbfounded joy of losing sight of the ball off the club face only for someone to point out that you actually hit it decent.

Video 2 - Lebron chunks the ground on his practice swing. Swings himself out of his shoes. Shrugs as he walks to camera. No quote needed, been there.

Video 3 - Lebron's buddy from behind camera; "Oh yeah! Straight! That's straight. Two in a row." The inclusion of two in a row is so telling for how the rest of the round likely was. Progress is progress.

Video 4 - The quotes are, well, let's say not really Breakfast Balls-friendly. But the energy behind them is relatable as can be. After a long day of hacking it around, you finally smash your drive late in the round and just let out that unbridled, chest-pumping #&%^ yeah!

Cruising the Italian countryside and golfing all the way

ALL ABOARD!

Premium golf travel is SO HOT right now. And I just stumbled across another gem of a find that will have you meandering the Italian countryside aboard a luxurious Orient Express train as you play four of the best courses Italy has to offer including the host venue for the 2023 Ryder Cup Marco Simone Country Club.

The trip is called Northern Greens from La Dolce Vita Orient Express. It's a four day, three night journey and, boy, does this company have some solid copywriters because they've got their trip descriptions dialed.

"From the moment you book, a personal concierge is at your service to meet every need." Love a concierge.

"Onboard, an internationally renowned professional golfer will enrich each day with technical tips, personal stories, and informal moments of exchange." lol @ informal moments of exchange.

"Along the course, every need is anticipated: gourmet treats by Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck, refreshing drinks, golf balls and tees and personalized course maps." Michelin snacks on-course? Yep.

And after spending some time at the clubhouse post-round, you're back on the train to be "lulled once again by the magic of La Dolce Vita Orient Express as the Italian landscape drifts by the window." Come on, now!

All this can be yours for the price of ~$15,000 Euro... annnnnnnnd I'm out. But it's nice to dream?

Back-to-back-to-back at the US Adaptive Open

DOMINANCE NOT SEEN SINCE TIGER

Normally, I'd always be a bit nervous to invoke Tiger's name when comparing golf dominance—but this week at the US Adaptive Open it actually fits.

Kipp Popert won his third consecutive USGA title. The previous golfer to three peat in a USGA Championship? Tiger Woods at the US Amateur (and Junior Amateur for the three years before that...).

For those who don't know, the US Adaptive Open is hosted by the USGA for male and female professional and amateur golfers with disabilities—promoting inclusion in the sport. Players compete in eight impairment categories, including arm, intellectual, leg, multiple limb amputee, neurological, seated, short stature, and vision impairments.

Popert beat his own record by going 24 under across the three days of play, completing a dominant competitive run at the event.

On the women's side, we also had a multiple-time winner with Kim Moore taking down the crown for the second time after her 2022 win.

This was the fourth U.S. Adaptive Open but the first to receive live final-round coverage on national TV.

Really enjoy what the USGA has done with this event and its continued growth in popularity and coverage. Pure inspiration.
